Matt McCusker

Matt McCusker moved his wife Marge and his three children, Christine, Michael, and Colleen to Westland in August 1977.  He worked for the Ford Motor Company at the Rouge Plant for 30 years.  He had a life long love for politics and the community. 
When his son, Mike started to play football at John Glenn during the 1980/81 school year, Matt and his wife Marge joined the football booster club.  During Mike’s football years, Matt became very active with the Football Boosters and eventually became President of the Booster Club. During this time, he gained many friends and acquaintances in the Westland community. 
Along the way, a seat on the Wayne-Westland School Board of Education opened. Several of the other football boosters encouraged him to run for the seat.  He did and he won.  This led to his most rewarding work in the community.  He was always doing what was right for the students and staff of the Wayne-Westland Community Schools.  He was very well known around the district.  He could walk into any school building and would greet everyone.  He was known for giving the best bear hugs.  He spent over 25 years serving the Wayne-Westland Community Schools.
When his daughter Colleen began her years at John Glenn, she was in the marching band. Matt and his wife then joined the band boosters.  Attending performances and supporting the band members.  During this time, he also took over announcing at the varsity football games. 
When Matt passed away in 2003, his funeral viewing would have been a party that he would have loved to attend.  Hundreds of friends and community members came to pay their respects and to honor his legacy.  He is certainly missed by his family and friends.
